WITH the Trump administration taking a very tough stand on immigration, the US government on Tuesday (27) warned Indian students studying in America that they may lose eligibility for future visas if they “skip classes, drop out or leave their program of study without informing”.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the US Embassy in India asked students to adhere to the terms of their visa.

Among foreign students in the US, Indians form a sizeable chunk having received more than 140,000 student visas in 2023, more than any other nation.

The embassy wants students to keep in touch with the educational institution, attend all planned classes, and remain enrolled full-time.

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,” the post read.

This advisory comes amid an uptick in immigration enforcement under the renewed Trump administration, and for foreign students, the margin for error is now narrower than ever.

Initially, the administration went after politically active students, especially those espousing the cause of Palestine.

Later, they began cancelling visas for foreign students, even for minor offenses like traffic violations.

As part of its crackdown on immigrants and foreign nationals, the Trump administration has revoked the permission of 4,700 international students to study, with little notice or explanation.

This led to a rash of lawsuits across the US filed by students challenging these rulings.

The latest warning comes days after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the Trump administration from terminating the legal status of international students across the US, while lawsuits challenging previous terminations are pending.

Pause on fresh interviews

The Trump administration has asked consular missions across the world to pause new student visa interviews as it plans to vet the social media activity of all foreign students aspiring to study in the US, according to media reports.

The State Department is preparing to expand the screening of their activity on social media, officials said.

The suspension is intended to be temporary and does not apply to applicants who already had scheduled their visa interviews.

A cable signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and obtained by The Associated Press says the State Department plans to issue guidance on expanded social media vetting.

“Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consulate sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor visa appointment capacity” until the guidance is issued, the cable says.

The Trump administration has been upset with the anti-Israel activism on American university campuses and has had several run-ins with universities like Harvard and other Ivy League institutions.
