A surgeon and educator with over two decades of experience, Dr Srinivasan will be the first woman CMO of the hospital

INDIAN-AMERICAN surgeon Dr Anitha Srinivasan has been appointed chief medical officer (CMO) of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan.
Dr Srinivasan will be the first woman CMO of the 150-year-old hospital, which serves East Harlem and surrounding communities.
There are only two women CMOs across the 11 NYC Health + Hospitals hospital facilities, and Dr Srinivasan is the only woman of color in that role.
She will take charge on June 1 and succeed Dr John T. Pellicone, who is stepping down after a tenure of ten years.
Dr Srinivasan began her career at NYC Health + Hospitals in the 1990s with a surgical residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.
After several years at an academic research center, she joined Metropolitan Hospital as an attending surgeon and associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, a position she continues to hold.
She founded the Metropolitan Breast Cancer Center and has served as its director since 2017.
In 2019, Dr Srinivasan was appointed deputy chief medical officer, and in 2020, she expanded her leadership role by becoming Director of Perioperative Services.
Welcoming Dr Srinivasan, NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan chief executive officer Julian S. John said, “We celebrate not only her exceptional qualifications and decades of service, but also a historic milestone — her appointment as our first woman CMO.
“Dr Srinivasan brings a combination of surgical expertise, academic leadership, and a deep understanding of the needs of the communities we serve.”
Dr Pellicone said, “As I step down, I am filled with pride and confidence knowing Dr Srinivasan will lead Metropolitan forward.”
Dr Srinivasan said she feels honored and humbled to lead a place “that has been my professional home for over 20 years.”
“As a surgeon, educator, and hospital administrator, I have seen firsthand the strength and resilience of our patients and staff,” she added.
The NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan hospital is a designated Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Center of Excellence and a recognized leader in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equity.
The hospital maintains the nation’s oldest hospital-medical school affiliation through its longstanding partnership with New York Medical College.
